Nene's meerkat - gr. 5

Papier mache is a great medium to work with after you've finished clay because you still have some muscle memory about how to shape and mold materials. But training your brain to see paper as a 3D material can be challenging. Well, these 5th graders did a great job with their dexterity, not to mention their imagination. The newspaper can be a bit tricky to wrangle, fold and get the right firmness.

This year we decided to do animals since they had created their own mythical creatures just before this project. The students loved getting their hands dirty in the slimey glue and layering the newspaper. My favorite part is when they get to the painting step and add the character. The face on this meerkat is adorable (as is the artist.) Here are some more cute animals and their creators.

Gabby's frog - gr. 5

Kaya K's dolphin and Kaya Y's koala - gr. 5

Kanoe's cat - gr. 5

Sanya's dog and Maddy's panda - gr. 5

Ella's bunny and Kennedy's monk seal - gr. 5

Hala'i's sea turtle and Alisa's bee - gr. 5

Kele'a's killer whale and Ashley's parrot - gr. 5
