We do this project every year, but I gotta say, this batch of work is spectacular! Each one is different and reflects artists personality. I think they deserve to be framed and hung prominently for all to admire!

The process of producing these beautiful works of art went as follows. First, the students took a photo of either a vase with flowers, a wooden horse, bottles or Russian dolls with their iPads. To be sure that all students had success, each object represented a different drawing level and they chose accordingly. I encouraged them to pick one that was challenging but not so hard that they would be frustrated. When photographing, I asked them to focus on framing the image to create a pleasing composition by cropping to create interesting negative space. Using basic shapes they mapped out where objects went and white size to make each element on the page. Then they refined the drawing with line by looking carefully, and finally added details.

After the drawing was done it was time to paint with watercolor. They mixed colors to match the objects (except for the people doing the bottles, I let them choose whatever colors they wanted because they were boring brown).

The Final step was to choose a background pattern that complimented the piece. We used a method I learned in design school where you create possible patterns, experimenting with "quiet" and "busy" patterns, then hold each one up separately to test it out before committing to a pattern. We used the same process to choose the colors.

I really enjoyed working with this group. They were very enthusiastic and hard workers who really learned to look carefully at detail and take their time. Congratulations!

I can’t get over the layers and LAYERS of color! Gorgeous pieces by your students.
