There's Color in the Shadows

If you look very carefully at the shadows in this art work, you will see colors!

The 4th graders are learning about one of myfavorite artists, Wayne Thiebaud.

Mr. Theibaud painted with lots of delicious colors in hidden places. This assignment is designed to get students to look really carefully at color, to notice the colors that are really there, not just assume for instance that a shadow is black or gray, or that a cherry is red. A shadow can have hints of color from the object that is casting the shadow. And cherry may be red, but it could also have purple, brown, blue and even white if there is a highlight.

One of the reasons that this assignment is fun, is that using the color of the paper becomes part of the art itself. Learning to use the paper color in creative ways, and let it show through the oil pastels, gives the piece depth and dimension. Great job girls!!
